I can’t express how excited I am to share this following message from my older brother Bryan and to share what I am about to experience with him. A few months back he received an offer to come and sing the National Anthem and perform the post show at the annual Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon in our home town of Oklahoma City. I had the opportunity to run the Half Marathon here in Nashville, and thought to myself, “how in the world could I get him to run the half while we were in OKC?” So I worked my magic and sweet talked him into it. He not only is now having a blast running 20-25 miles per week during his training, but is also now raising awareness and honoring those who lost their lives or lost loved ones in the OKC Bombing back in 1995, but is also raising money for those who live in major poverty through Food for the Hungry as he runs. I love seeing this, as it says so much about my best friend’s (brother) character and heart to live beyond himself. I can’t wait to cross the finish line this Sunday in our home State of Oklahoma and for such good causes. See his post that was sent out to his fans and friends and go support his run, as this is not a typical thing for him to do!

MESSAGE FROM BRYAN WHITE!

BIG NEWS :: If you remember, over 18 years ago, a bomb struck the Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. The blast claimed 168 lives, including 19 children under the age of 6, and injured more than 680 people. It would remain the most destructive act of terrorism on American soil until the September 11, 2001 attacks. The blast destroyed or damaged 324 buildings within a sixteen-block radius, destroyed or burned 86 cars, and shattered glass in 258 nearby buildings. With this being my home state, you can believe this was heavy on my heart and still is. I’m honored to have been able to assist in aid, along with your support, in aid for the families effected by this devastation.

I’M DOING WHAT??? :: Well now I’ve been asked to participate in the annual Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon by not only singing the National Anthem before the race of over 12,000, providing the post race concert entertainment, AND NOW…..DRUM ROLL PLEASE…..I’m also running in the race. Yes folks, I’ll be running my first half marathon with my little brother Daniel. Not only will be running to get in better shape for my family so they can have their daddy around a bit longer, but each runner in this race runs as a tribute to the victims, family members and survivors of the bombing, Oklahoma City hosts the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. We run to give to the Memorial. We run to involve the community, the nation, and perhaps the world in the continuing process of coping with the tragedy of the past. We run as a step toward a better future.

ANOTHER REASON TO RUN :: Not only am I running to raise awareness in honoring those impacted by the OKC Bombing, but I now bring a cause to you that I’m deeply inspired by. I am running for the “least of these”. There are children all over the world that will go without food tonight when we have plenty. Children that have to walk all day to get water for their family, and we have dozens of water sources in our homes at an arms reach. I run for these children. You may not be able to run a marathon or you may be too busy to travel overseas to help these in need, but you can make a huge difference in the lives of these children of the 3rd world by sponsoring one of them TODAY. For $32 a month you can help fund an entire community that your child lives in, and you will also have the opportunity to write your child and inspire hope and life into this child. This is real my friends. Here I’ve posted a photo of me and … the sweet little girl that my family and I have been sponsoring for over 5 years. Also posted is a picture of my brother’s sponsor child Nifadson and his two boys. They’ve been sponsoring Nifadson for over a year now.

Would you partner with me by sponsoring a child or making a donation through Food for the Hungry, as I run this half marathon. I’m doing this for the least of these …. would you please do the same and click here to JOIN TEAM BRYAN WHITE?

——————————-

Pretty cool huh? I’m so honored to get to run along side of my big brother, and with as much travel as I’ve had lately I haven’t been able to train as much as I’d like. Therefore I’m pretty sure Bryan’s going to be dragging me along. Who would have thought, huh? I LOVE IT! It’s going to be a great weekend that will go down in the books for sure.

SUPPORT HIS RUN [HERE] or SUPPORT THE OKC MEMORIAL [HERE] or just go follow him or twitter or facebook and cheer him on!

First of all, if you participate in the swim – bike – run or ANY TYPE OF WORKOUT regarding building of your muscles or endurance YOU CAN WIN $100 worth of SOME FUN STUFF HERE, so read on!

I just started my adventures with the SWIM – BIKE – RUN just three years ago with a heart pain & a bit of depression and it has honestly CHANGED MY LIFE! (read my story HERE & I want to hear yours) I don’t consider myself anywhere close to a pro, or as some call it a “beast” by all means. HA! I never take myself too serious, but I’ve learn to push myself through this exercise, and it’s faded over into my personal life in many ways. But one thing that I have had to take more serious is my nutrition if I want to enjoy exercise. There’s nothing worse that going on a long ride or run and you only find yourself feeling horrible afterwards, when you should feel great. This type of fatigue can only come with a lack of rest or a lack of nutrition in your system. You really need to be eating right, and two things that help me on any long ride or run is a good pre workout and a post (recovery) drink. I’ve listed below my picks that have now gotten me through two seasons of long century rides, half marathons and Olympic distance triathlons and also how 3 INSPIRING PEOPLE WILL WIN THEM. However, THIS IS FOR ANYONE AND ANY DISTANCE. I hope this helps you all become more serious about your nutrition as you swim – bike – run so that you can continue a healthy lifestyle and also inspire more people, and raise for funds for those in need along the way! GO GET EM!

Due to the face that I had such an overwhelming response, the weekend coming up, and that I promised a few friends that I would post the recipe of the steak rub that I make, here it is!

Ingredients:
1/2 cup – Pure Cane Sugar
1/2 cup – Kosher Salt
1/4 cup – Fine Ground Pepper
1/4 cup – Crush Red Pepper (judge depending on how much heat you like)
1/4 cup – Extra Virgin Olive Oil
4 Rib Eye Steaks

What to do:
Grab a mixing bowl and put all of your ingredients in and stir together as you add in the oil. This makes a paste or glaze that you’ll then add a thin layer to both sides of your steak. Then proceed to grill the steak however you like. Enjoy!

As some of you know, a few months back I was approached by the largest sports nutrition company on the planet, EAS, about interviewing their Unstoppable Tour Athlete Sam Tickle regarding the 30 Sports in 30 Days. Throughout this opportunity I was able to learn how he survived and finished strong after 30 intense sports in 30 days, ending with a FULL marathon without experience muscle fatigue, exhaustion or dehydration.

If it was so important for Sam to be on the proper nutritional plan before a challenge than it would be equally important for me when I’m training for my next race or physical challenge.

You can be in the best shape of your life, but without the proper nutrition you’ll fall short of your full potential every time.

Now, the crazy thing is, as I was tweeting, blogging and facebooking about this experience others were actually reading and taking note. One in particular that was taking notes was my friend Scott, a police officer in my area. He has always dreamed of being a part of the S.W.A.T Team (Special Weapons And Tactics), and was actually signed up and scheduled for the try outs. Scott is already in great shape, but most people that are in great shape are generally prepared for only a one day or one moment event that they’ll go all out on, but will have the opportunity to rest the next day and countless days after. Much like Sam Tickle and his 30 Sports in 30 Days, Scott was now in an extremely challenging position and was in need of a quick recovery program for this five day in a row S.W.A.T challenge. There was no room for error or fatigue and failure wasn’t an option for Scott. He needed to prepare his nutrition properly and strategically On top of the challenge alone, that they have to wear over 70 pounds of armor and gear in humid 95 degree weather, thus instigating his call to me. I was able to work with him, based off of what I learned directly from Sam and EAS nutritionist, including a pre-workout drink by EAS called PUSH along with two different recovery drinks, RELOAD & ARMOR along with the proper foods and intake of H20 several days before the first day of the challenge. One of the comments that were made by a Scott’s leading officer was

“I’ve never seen anyone actually get stronger after the second day of S.W.A.T training.”

Pretty cool to be a part of this process and needles to say, SCOTT MADE S.W.A.T!!!!!

PUSH was able to give him exactly what it says, a PUSH. It’s created to give an athlete anaerobic threshold, to allow further PUSH on your muscle before muscle fatigue. Basically you last much longer with the proper nutrients in your body. In order to get the best out of this product you’ll want to take it for several days before you truly want to benefit from it. This will get it fully in your system and make you ready to rock it!

ARMOR & RELOAD were of great benefit for Scott at the end of the day. It helped rejuvenate his muscles as well as increase his muscle strength, and power. It’s one of my favorite EAS products and I have never benefited more from a recovery drink. Everyone I have turned onto to ARMOR, from countless triathletes, runners, and even my wife, a professional choreographer and dancer, has said the same.

Here are a few quotes from Scott when he and I caught up after he was accepted in to S.W.A.T

“RELOAD & ARMOR helped me recover after very grueling training. I was able to recover each night and was ready for the next day.”

” I took PUSH each morning before training. Unlike other pre-workout drink, this one was easy on my stomach and tasted GREAT! I definitely felt a boost through my morning training.”

” The EAS products, combined with proper nutrition and hydration, most certainly helped me to succeed through a grueling process.”

Thanks EAS for creating amazing products to keep us all replenished with the nutrients and strength that we need during our our most challenging athletic challenges and adventures that we live daily. Thanks for keeping us full of life!

Now if you remember, this is my ONE fundraising race of the year, so it’s a pretty important race for me. This race has nothing to do with setting personal athletic goals, and has everything to do with making a difference beyond myself. Therefore, I haven’t stopped thinking about the folks that have already donated well over $1,000 to help children in poverty all over the world through FH World Sports (A Division of Food for the Hungry). Plus I’ve paid my $100 registration so I could have the opportunity to raise support for this race. My wife thinks I’m nuts, and maybe I am, but I’ve asked my doctors and they said “if you feel up to it, DO IT,” So guess what???? I’m going to still race this [1 mile swim ... 26 mile bike ride ... 6 mile run] – RACE AGAINST POVERTY. I’ll be relying a good bit on this year’s training thus far, as well as my nutrition and rest this week.

There is a boy somewhere in Haiti named Nfadson, and others just like him all over the world, that walk three miles daily and sometimes twice a day to fetch water from the nearest well for his family in the 100 degree weather because in most countries there is no such thing as running water. This is something that we can really take for granted every day if we’re not careful. This is true poverty! If our children had to fetch water like this everyday then they wouldn’t have the time to go to school, be with their family and friends, be protected and out of harms way at such an early age, or just honestly, be a kid!

NEW WAY OF LIFE

I have added a new way of life and a new color to why I swim – bike & run. One race out of the year, hopefully for the rest of my life, I’ll be raising awareness and raising support for a cause. Not only a cause that is near and dear to my heart, but a cause that is highly attainable for you and for me, as well as an extreme help to humanity itself. This year I have chosen to support an amazing organization FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY, through their new sports division FH WORLD SPORTS. They are a community development organization that goes into communities all over the world that have the worst living conditions you could imagine, assess the need, build hope, gain trust, and walk along side of those in need so that they may become a self sustained community within 8-10 years by building water wells, providing education and teaching agriculture and trade, to name a few. For more on what Food for the Hungry does, click HERE. My family and I believe in this organization so much that we’ve sponsored a sweet little boy by the name of Nfadson, the boy I spoke of in my intro and is also in the post image, from the country of Haiti. I will asking you to support this cause by supporting me in racing in the NashVegas Olympic Distance Triathlon on September 10th (1 miles swim … 26 mile bike … 6 mile run)

This will be just the thing for you gadget heads out there like me that don’t have a lot to spend, but want the best equipment you can get, while also learning a bit about nutritional supplements that will help you stay strong through your training. Now remember, you don’t have to break the bank to get what you need to swim – bike – run, BUT, you also want quality enough stuff to make sure that you’ll enjoy your workout. I almost went and bought an El-Cheapo mountain bike at Wal-Mart, to use for my first triathlon last year, and thank God I didn’t or more than likely I wouldn’t have stuck with it, due to it being a miserable experience. Places that I shop for cycling, swimming and biking gear are Nashbar.com (online), and for local shops I go to Endurance, RB’s Cyclery, Fleet Feet and REI.

Below is a list of what gets me through the year and helps keep me motivated and fit, as well as some good places with great prices to order from. Now I didn’t get all this stuff all at once. It came over time. Just find the essentials and start there. Have fun and ask any questions or add to the mix as you like in the comment section.

As a family man, (two young boys and a wife), it’s sometimes difficult to get a long bike ride in each week. This is a way for me to do that. I hope these tips help push you to go out of your way to make this happen. It has been life changing for me, and I hope I always get to do it.

- Drive your route before hand and set your odometer so you’ll ensure that you have a safe route and can plan your time so you’re not late for work.
- Choose a back road route, even if it adds mileage to your route. Not only will this be a more safer option, but it will also be more peaceful. I hate having to focus on vehicles during my ride.
- Take your change of clothes the day before work so you don’t have to wear a backpack.
- Find the closest shower within walking distance from your office, or just bring tons of deodorant and calogne so you don’t stink up the office.
- Leave as early as you can to avoid the height of the morning traffic.
- Get a flashing seat light for the back of your bike in case you have a foggy or dense morning.
- Wear a helmet and a fairly bright jersey to ensure that you’re seen by vehicles
- Take a tube change and pump, or co2 cartridge in case of a blow out.
- Take a cell phone. I never know when I might have an accident and need someone to come and pick me up.
- Tell a friend or family member that you’re commuting into work, and have someone on standby in case you need them to pick you up for any reason.
- Check weather conditions. There’s nothing worse than getting stuck in a thunder storm on a ride.
- Eat right the night before and for lunch to ensure strength on the ride, and so you’ll feel good throughout your day.
- Make sure you have scheduled any meetings within walking distance of your office, or have a ride to your meetings, because you won’t have a car that day.
- Ride offensively. I now see about every third car texting, talking on the phone or putting on mascara.
- Look around at God’s creation as you ride.
- The most important is to BE SAFE!

If you use these tips above, and decide to ride into work at least once a week, it could end up being the most peaceful and fulfilling part of your week.

These are things that help me have a successful, peaceful, and fulfilling bike commute to work each week. It also helps me build in my weekly workouts into my every day life. It’s the only way I can make it happen some weeks.

PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO EMAIL ME (daniel@danielcwhite.com) IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON THIS TOPIC. ALSO, HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF COMMUTING TO WORK? IF YOU HAVEN’T YET, WHAT’S HOLDING YOU BACK?

As a recap, I was asked to be a part of this LIVE interview as a local triathlete and blogger. I was humble, as I’m nowhere near the athlete that Sam Tickle is, but understand some of the challenges he faced during the 30 Sports 30 Days 30 Cities challenge. It talks about how he got through such intense training for this challenge through nutrition and his mental state. Check it out and comment away! I would love to know what you think and if this pertains to you.

RECAP OF THIS UNSTOPPABLE EXPERIENCE
What a great experience for me and an honor to be a part of. EAS is such an amazing leader in sports nutrition, and Sam is one of the most amazing athletes I’ve ever come in contact with. To be a part of this journey at all is truly mind boggling to me and a huge inspiration to me and I know so many others. Most people would look at Sam and the Unstoppable Tour and think, “I could never do that.” Honestly, that’s not what this tour is about. It’s about getting you to do things that you could never imagine. Much like what I’ve learned over the past couple of years (READ THE STORY). Pushing yourself beyond where you are today so you can make a bigger difference and be an inspiration to those around you, within your strengths and influences. I’m not really some crazy, over the top athlete speaking here. I’m just an average guy that has realized that without my health, I have nothing. I can’t chase my kids around the yard, be creative in my marriage by honoring my wife the way she needs to be honored, and give the time and energy into my work. I would encourage all of you to go find something that you enjoy, that keeps you fit, builds community that keeps you going, and live a much longer and happy life. Then go show someone else how to do it!
