“This debt and this hardship WILL COME TO AN END WITH ME”

Posted 30 Nov 2011 in ::Life::,Family,Giving Back

I’m learning more and more each day about poverty. What poverty is and how it affects people. There are also so many people that are in-slaved by their debt, much like this man you see in this title image. This man in Indian and is a literal slave to his debtor and must work in the quarry crushing rocks with one small sledge hammer to repay his debt. Most debts like this will never be paid back and will be handed down to his children and his children’s children. The irony of it all in my Western mind is that this man’s debt is only around $600. As I watch a movie called the 58 film, I learn of this man’s story in it and he says …

“I am a quarry worker, trapped and bound to repay my debt. I have problems like the other quarry workers, but I have one hope, that my daughter will not face this. This debt and this hardship WILL COME TO AN END WITH ME.”

Many of us may be in financial debt as this man is, but will never be bound in this way. Maybe your debt is the possibility of divorce, fatherlessness, education, etc etc. Mine could possibly be seen as divorce. If this man’s story were mine, I would say …

“I am a product of divorce, trapped and bound to not succeed in marriage. I have problems like those around me with a similar past, but just as the man that works in the rock quarry, I have one hope, that my sons will not face this. Divorce in my family WILL COME TO AN END WITH ME just as poverty and quarry work WILL COME TO AN END WITH HIM.”

WHAT IS YOUR DEBT THAT “STOPS WITH YOU?”

    Thanks Meredith for the comment. I knew if this man's quote impacted me in the way that it did, than it would do the same for others. This is my hope at least. Glad it connected with you too.

    Beautiful Daniel..this is the way many of us should look at our situations, instead of feeling like a victim. I too am a product of divorce, and an alcoholic father, among other things. Our pasts and situations can’t be changed but how we react to them can. I too have these things that come to me yet I don't let it label me as to who I am, and they will end with me. These things only make us a stronger and better person. Because I came from an alcoholic family, I CHOOSE to drink only on special occasions. I am more committed to my marriage as well. These things are what we concisely choose to do. I also think my morals and values taught as a kid comes into play as well. You are wise beyond your years Daniel… our mind is a tricky thing.. it can help us through tough times or bring you to a fearful halt. I thing yours in capable of great things. Be well.. your friend Tami
