Am I All Heart And No Brains?

As you know, I just got over a pretty severe case of Meningitis, and have been unsure if I could race in the NashVegas Olympic Distance Triathlon this Saturday in Ashland City, TN. Now if you remember, this is my ONE fundraising race of the year, so it’s a pretty important race for me. This race has nothing to do with setting personal athletic goals, and has everything to do with making a difference beyond myself. Therefore, I haven’t stopped thinking about the folks that have already donated well over $1,000 to help children in poverty all over the world through FH World Sports (A Division of Food for the Hungry). Plus I’ve paid my $100 registration so I could have the opportunity to raise support for this race. My wife thinks I’m nuts, and maybe I am, but I’ve asked my doctors and they said “if you feel up to it, DO IT,” So guess what???? I’m going to still race this [1 mile swim ... 26 mile bike ride ... 6 mile run] – RACE AGAINST POVERTY. I’ll be relying a good bit on this year’s training thus far, as well as my nutrition and rest this week.

SO AM I ALL HEART AND NO BRAINS? AFTER WATCHING THE VIDEO BELOW, YOU TELL ME. PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT ON THIS POST AND BE COMPLETELY HONEST. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK?

i think it's both! I do worry about you doing the race so quickly but i also know you wouldn't be doing it if you didn't think you were not up to it. Just take it easy, know that you haven't trained like you wanted, and be realistic about your time, your stamina, and the limits of your body in it's current state. Your body will let you know when you need to walk a few feet or so to "rest" or if you even need to stop before you get to the finish line (let's hope not) and as long as you listen to it you'll do fine. You are an amazing guy, a super smart guy whose brain is as big as his heart now get those shoes on and get your race on! Love ya man! Stay safe!

    Hi Daniel, it's Nana,
I'm sure Lindsay thinks you're "nuts" (your words) because she loves you, and wants what's best for you considering your recent circumstances. I totally admire your conviction, and wanting to fulfill your obligation and goal. I know that in certain instances, people have to "push through" certain things, but your long term health is the main goal. If you are in doubt, I would check with your doctor. If, at any time, you feel like you are not up to it, don't push yourself too hard for the sake of your goal. People certainly understand what you have been through, and want you to be safe and healthy for "the long haul".
Meningitis is a very serious illness. (even the mild one). It can have long lasting complications in some cases. Just do what you feel comfortable doing, and know that people don't expect you to do something you are not physically able to do, if you decide NOW is not the time.
You will have lots of opportunities to do great things, if this is too soon for you. I want to donate to your cause, but I don't exactly know how to do it. Please e-mail me on how to do it. Wouldn't the money still go where it needs to go, even if you didn't participate, or just did an altered schedule?
Part of me thinks it IS too soon for you, but then, I'm Nana!! I love you.

Ha HA! Thanks for the thoughts Marcy. Especially on the “brains” part :-)

Well, from one nut to the next..I have to say that I would do the exact same thing you are doing. I know you are doing this selflessly, to raise money for a phenomenal cause, not to achieve a PR. With that in mind, use that awesome brain that God gave you to listen to your body and be smart in this challenge. In doing so and finishing healthy, it will be that much more rewarding for your heart. I have faith in you friend. You can do this! However, even if you feel like you can’t finish, you’re still a champ. Because in the end you are accomplishing something much greater than completing a Tri!

Daniel i have to agree with your Nana. All i have to say God will be with you & he will watch over you & please be careful you feel yourself draggin down take a rest, you don't need to end up right back in that hospital due to wearing yourself down. You got heart for doin this Daniel & i'm proud of ya. You will be in my prayers on Saturday. If i was still living there in Clarksville i would have been there to cheer you on cause Ashland City isnt that far from there just a couple of exits up or so.

Anytime you do something for something other than yourself, it is all heart. It may be a lack of brains, but that is the point sometimes.

Doing something that doesn't make sense is the very definition of charity and that is the point of life. Keep doing what your doing and let the chips fall where they will.

    Great job and enjoy.
