Chronicles of my first Triathlon … pt3 “Community”

Posted 13 Jul 2010 in ::Endurance::,::Life::,{Top Blog Posts}

Well, things seem to be going great so far training for my first triathlon. Each week gets just a little bit harder of course, but that’s
the whole purpose. I’m also amazing at how working each day has truly brought out the best in me. It’s almost as if the negative rises in me when I take a few days off. Not sure why, but I just consider it good accountability to keep pushing, surrounding myself around the right people and stay positive.

This week something really impacting hit me regarding working out in community. As a part of my training, I’ve started uploading all of my rides, runs & swims to a program on my iPhone called iMapMyFitness (iMapMyRideiMapMyrun). It gives distance, calories burned, duration, speed, etc, etc. It also allows you to upload to Facebook and/or Twitter to show all of your friends or training partners where you’re at in the training. At first I really didn’t want to do this cause it seemed like I was showing off, but in return I noticed that it was only building community. I’ve had several close and distant friends that have reached out to me lately after seeing my twitter or facebook status on running or cycling. Since I’ve been posting, I’ve set up multiple rides and runs already for the next couple of weeks outside of my normal plan. It’s just opened the door to spend more time with friends that I haven’t been able to connect with lately and get in shape at the same time. Now THIS, is what life is about to me.

Also, I have to give props to my buddies that have been helping me get up almost every morning at 5:30am or out on the weekends. Without them being there I would never make it out the door:  Brian Elliott, Aaron Fortner, David Ott, Blake Bergstrom, Spence Smith. These guys have been a huge inspiration to me in their own ways. Whether it be swimming tips from the infamous Spence or cycling 101 from the Blakster, consistancy & patience from Aaron, encouragement to stick with the plan from Brian and inspiration to get involved and catch up with the team at the last minute by David. I highly recommend surrounding yourself around guys like these on a daily basis. This, my friends, is what community is about!

WHO ARE YOU SURROUNDING YOURSELF AROUND AND HOW DO THEY INSPIRE YOU AND WHAT ARE YOU GIVING IN RETURN?

Big D, I expect your times to get better and better. Keep at it bro. Remember "If you train hard, you'll not only be hard, you'll be hard to beat." H Walker.

I think this it is so amazing that you are able to train together like this. A few years ago, I wanted to train for the NYC Bike Marathon and could not find one person willing to hack the training. For that, i envy you that you have such wonderful friends. It is so inspiring to read about your efforts.

Awesome to see you are training hard. I'd love to be one of those old friends you can get a run or ride in with! Put me down. I'm an endurance runner, so anything from 3m to 23m is good with me. Just how much pain do we want?!? ;-]

Also good for a bike ride. Let's get together soon.

I’ve lots of respect for someone who does Triathlons, and always enjoyed the view for all those competing as all being winners just for finishing that kind of drooling competition… though I am not a runner myself, I was once a Jr. Lifeguard in my youth, still enjoy swimming and do enjoy mountain biking still today, and can’t wait till my health is back to 110% and I can do the kind of mountain biking I use to do on logging and hiking/biking trails in Central NY State’s Finger Lakes region of steep valleys and gorges in my area…

I also like your use of your iPhone and the apps that also can post your results on Twitter and Facebook!!! Also how you are also highlighting your friends that you workout with and enjoying in competing with!!! Always good to have friends and a bit of rival competition!!!

Keep up the good work and know you will get better times int he future!!!

Way to go, Daniel! I'm no longer running after my accident in January, where I hurt my spine and since have a lower back injury with the sciatic nerve being pinched. The accountability program is great and why shouldn't you be proud of what you do – proud is the new humble: raise the bar for others and show them what they can do!!

Keep us in the loop!! W00T!
My recent post E-Motion – take your pick!

Wow Lydia, I didn't know that the accident affected you that bad. I'm so, so sorry to hear that. Thanks so much for your encouragement, but mostly for the comment about raising the bar for others. I must say, I've owned this a bit more, because I look back at those that have inspired me the most in this arena, and now I'm giving back by doing the same thing in the same ways. Hopefully it makes a difference in people's lives as it has mine.

Thanks so much Charles for taking to time to say hey and encourage. The training is definitely tough, but steady. The swimming is what I'm having the toughest time with. Not because I'm not a good swimmer, but it's more about the timing of my breathing. I think this week I'm going to hit my stride and do much better. At least in my first tri I'll be in a pool and not a lake. It'll be a little less intense I'm sure. Thanks again Charles!

Man, thanks so much for reading and yes, it's hard work, but so fulfilling my friend. I'm so inspired by our conversation on the phone recently and your story. Let's definitely go out and run a few soon. Call me!

Thanks so much June! I agree, I have been deeply blessed with amazing friends and from all walks of life. If I was in New York, I'd be running riding right along side of you my friend. Keep plugging away and don't let that slow you down. As far as I'm concerned, with technology now days, we can train together, as you'll see on my facebook and blog, but just not directly. :-) go to http://www.MapMyFitness.com and join the community!

Yeah man, this week's BRICK (bike & run) about kicked my butt. Six days a week until August 28th. WOW…it's flying by. Now I've gone and signed up for the Jack and Back, a 155 mile bike ride from Nashville to the Jack Daniel's Destillery in Lynchburg, TN that benefits Multiple Sclerosis. Now just set up a group for my first 50 miles ride next Saturday. Call me crazy!

Thanks for the quote….I live by them.

Inability to agree. To cease to argue and search for new sense in article for itself it it is difficult. To remove conviction that you think correctly, and another is mistaken, for many it is simply impossible. But then the prospect to receive something useful of the read is lost. It would Seem, all is simple – find that, first of all, with what you can agree, then state the vision, the experience. But for many for some reason it is an excessive problem. And for you?
